MARIA BC BETELGEUSE

Maria BC releases 'Betelgeuse' the third single from her anticipated debut album Hyaline, a sparsely arranged and emotional exploration of loss. Set against minimal guitars and wavering synths that hover gently in the peripherals, Maria's voice is rises and swells between an aching softness to an urgent desperation as the narrator of the song is caught between their desire to leave home now they are grown and the traumatic abandonment of their father: "They feel cruel for leaving home, but ultimately they follow the path of the man they despise, the ghost of him, their guiding star." The song is named after a star which was reported to have been witnessed exploding in 2019, a once in a lifetime phenomena, which turned out to be a mistake; Maria uses as a metaphor for grief and loss, "It was a let down. And likewise it’s disappointing, when you experience loss, that the world doesn’t stop to admire some new hole that’s been ripped into the universe. There’s no great explosion." -Toby Evans-Jesra
